Current Projects
Going for Gold Project
Good public policy--whether in the area of transportation, post-secondary education, internal trade, research and development, environmental standards, agriculture, taxation, international relations, or any number of other areas affected by the actions (or inaction) of governments—is critical to facilitating the efforts of individuals and businesses to keep the western Canadian economy internationally competitive.
Western Economy Project
Canada West Foundation economics team publishes four economic profiles and forecasts each year (one for each western province), conducts a variety of economic research, organizes events on economic topics, participates in regional and national economic policy discussions, generates practical recommendations for improving economic policy in Canada and informs and encourages debate about the western economy through media commentary.
The West in Canada Project
As the country continues to wrestle with a wide range of public policy challenges, Canada West Foundation is furthering its efforts through its West in Canada Project to ensure that western Canadians are heard and understood. The project aims to further shed light on the West, communicate its frustrations and aspirations, seek ways to build on the common ground and weave the region into the national whole.
- Executive-in-Residence Program
The Canada West Foundation's Executive in Residence program connects the Foundation with successful executives from the business community to lead specific projects which, enhance the core research mission of the Foundation. Programs are typically one-year term.
Past Projects
Western Cities Project
Understanding the constellation of issues that must be addressed for our cities to reach their potential and compete with the great cities of world is the goal of the Canada West Foundation’s Western Cities Project . The project has been providing decision-makers and the public with timely and accessible information about urban issues and putting forward practical recommendations for addressing urban public policy challenges since 2000.
Getting it Right -- Building a Canadian energy strategy for a carbon-constrained world
Investing Wisely Project -- How to best use Alberta's non-renewable resource wealth to ensure prosperity both today and tomorrow
Land Stewardship Initiative -- The role of public policy in facilitating land stewardship, the practice of responsible land usage to ensure that natural capital is maintained or enhanced for future generations.
The NEXT West Project -- Examing the ways in which the West will transform and evolve over the next 20 years.
